Mini-Workshops for 2024
Mini-Workshops are short workshops, 2-4 hours long, organized and taught by Guild Members for Guild Members. There is no charge. There may be limits to the number of participants (see individual offerings). Mini-Workshops may be on Zoom or in person and on any topic. It’s a great way to meet other members and get some new information.
Interested in offering one? Contact the Mini-Workshops Chair with an idea, work out a schedule, and prepare your workshop. Concepts: weavers knots, a weave structure, adding beads, tips and tricks. Mini-Workshops Chair will schedule the Zoom or in-person time, collect and send information to participants.

About: Are you interested in how you might use Photoshop to create weaving designs? This presentation will give students a high-level overview of software and resources available so that they can start designing digital tie-ups or liftplans. This workshop will consist of informational slides and then demos showing both a tie-up design and a liftplan design. If interest and time allows, Jennifer will also demonstrate how she uses Photoshop for her drawloom designs.
No experience with Photoshop is necessary, but a basic understanding of weaving software and computers is helpful. This workshop will be of most interest to students with looms with 8 or more shafts, although all are welcome!
Teacher: Jennifer Shuster-Clark

When: March 19, 2024 - Tuesday, 12:30 - 2:30 PM, IN PERSON
About: This mini workshop will present the basics of warp painting on cellulose fibers. It will include types of dyes, planning and preparing the warp, mixing and applying the dye, curing and washing the warp after dying. I will also touch on protein fibers. This will be a demonstration with only a tiny bit of hands on. No one will be exposed to dye powders so masks are not needed for this demo. Probably there won't be any slopping of dye, but very casual dress is recommended. A source list will be provided.
Teacher: Cheri Bridges

When: February 24, 2024 - Saturday, 10AM – 1PM, IN PERSON
About: Have you tried tablet weaving in a class or on your own but now find yourself stuck? Maybe you are struggling to warp a new project, or choosing yarns, or perhaps you find your loom to be uncomfortable and you can’t quite remember the techniques involved. Though there will likely be time to weave during the workshop, the focus will be on eliminating obstacles that prevent you from tablet weaving. In-person.
Teacher: Stacy Schlutsmeyer

WORKSHOP IS FULL (12/20/23)
When: January 29, 2024 - Wednesday, 10-2, in-person.
About: For those who have a wheel and have never used it or want to learn to spin but don’t know what to ask or buy in equipment or fiber, or how to find additional instruction. Experienced spinning teacher can evaluate your wheel and answer questions and perhaps even get you spinning. Potential to “spin off” a social/learning study group in West Seattle in my home.
Teacher: Vivian Mizuta.

When: June 6, 2023 - Tuesday, 11:00 - 2:00. Via Zoom (updated 3/21/23)
About: Learn the tips and tricks to weaving a weft ikat.
More info: "In weft ikat, it is the weft threads that are ikat dyed. This type of weaving is more difficult than warp ikat, as the pattern will be formed only as the weaving progresses. This means that the weaver has to constantly center and readjust the yarns to ensure the pattern is formed correctly."

Teacher: Kathy Hutchinson.
When: April 5, 2023 - Wednesday, in-person, limited to 12 spaces, open
About: This is a hands-on workshop to talk about and try your hand using a horizontal and a vertical warp reel. Which one works for you? Time to find out.
Teachers: Eileen O’Connor & Kathy Veit.
When: April 15, 2023 - TBA
About: Many of you know inkle means “narrow band” but that doesn’t mean the options for using an inkle loom have to be limited. This workshop will showcase the broad variety of weaving types that can be done on a very portable inkle loom, including
Plain Inkle Weaving – including how to make heddles and warp the loom
Advanced Inkle Weaving – learning the basics of pick-up (and drop-down)
Card/Tablet Weaving – a couple of options for warping the loom, and an overview on types of card weaving, whether it’s threaded in patterns or double face styles
Brocaded Tablet Weaving – a few techniques for how to use a supplementary weft to create designs on top of the weaving
Rigid-Heddle Weaving - a bonus section on how to use rigid heddles on inkle looms for demonstrations or working with trickier yarns
Teacher: Melissa Von Aschen-Cook.
When: March 1, 2023 - Wednesday, 11am, Zoom, open
About: Are you curious about weaving on a Drawloom, but don't actually have a Drawloom? Me too! Then I learned about a pattern weaving technique called Smålandsväv. It uses 2 separate harnesses (ie, sets of shafts), but it can be done on a counterbalance or countermarch loom with just a little modification. It uses 2 shuttles, and you can weave beautiful patterns! I'll show you what I did to my Glimakra Ideal loom to set it up for Smålandsväv, and I'll show you what I wove.
