In the summer of 2008, the Seattle Weavers' Guild was invited to partner with the Southeast Seattle Senior Center at 4655 Holly St. Seattle, WA 98118. We were asked to help resurrect the weaving activities that for over 30 years, used to take place under the guidance of our dear member Noel Hammock, who passed away several years ago.
SWG was presented with the exciting opportunity to utilize a space with over 20 looms of several varieties, supplies, tools, books, yarn and fabric strips - all just waiting for eager hands to put to work again!
SWG volunteers toiled over 80 hours getting the equipment serviced, inventoried, tidied up and ready for an open house, where Guild members demonstrated numerous aspects of fiber arts including kumihimo, drop spindling, weaving, spinning, inkle weaving, and winding a warp. Among the many visitors who toured the facility during this event, were Noel’s husband Jim (age 100) and daughter Janice. They were pleased that something Noel loved so much would be revived and appreciated again.
Seattle Weavers' Guild and our related community who teach fiber arts, are invited to utilize this wonderful space, day or evening, to teach ongoing or one-of-a-kind classes, do demos, etc - be creative! There is no age requirement or residency requirement to participate. Besides the dedicated loom room, there are additional large, light meeting spaces available for use. The facility has an elevator and a parking lot.
