November 2022: Pinwheels Treadling Variations

Woven by Carol Buchmiller

Pattern source:

Towelpalooza class by Janet Dawson and Sue Willingham, January 2020

Description:

Pinwheels is an 8-shaft twill with color and weave effects created by 8-end warp and weft stripes in charcoal, natural, and red.

The Towelpalooza class looms were dressed with extremely generous warps (30 yards, I think??) and even after two sessions of the class there was much left over on most of the looms. Sue and Janet very kindly offered the leftover warps to any students who were interested, drawing names at random to determine who got what. I ended up with the pinwheels warp-- 18 yards of it.

Last Spring I finally got the warp on a loom, wove a few towels, got a little bored (not that pinwheels aren’t lovely, but…) and started wondering what else I could do with this warp without having to change the tieup. I spent a little time in Fiberworks and came up with a few treadling and color variations. Many experiments looked good on the screen but failed the float test pretty dramatically. These are the survivors.

Warp and weft yarn:

Warp and weft are Brassard 8/2 unmercerized cotton in natural, charcoal, and cerise, with a couple of picks of turquoise to separate the changes in treadling.

Sett:

Sett is 22 EPI and PPI. Woven with 536 ends, threaded straight draw on shafts 1 through 8 and sleyed 2-3-3-3 on an 8-dent reed.

Finishing:

Sample was machine washed on hot, tumble-dried damp and pressed dry. Shrinkage was 13% in width and 10% in length.

Loom:

Sample was woven on an 8-shaft Schacht Mighty Wolf jack loom.

Bio:

Carol Buchmiller is a longtime knitter who started weaving in 2016 in an attempt to use up her yarn stash. Now she has a weaving stash and a growing collection of looms.
