Workshop: Janet Phillips - Decorative Stitch Double Cloth

This zoom workshop will focus on Decorative Stitched Double Cloth, an unusual structure that does not get much attention. To learn and understand the structure, students will weave a sample blanket (gamp). They can either weave the sample from Janet’s book or design their own.

Skill Level:

Intermediate to advanced weavers.

Materials required:

  • Students are required to have a copy of Janet’s book, “Exploring Woven Fabrics”

  • 8 shaft loom with at least 14” weaving width

  • 12 or 14 dent reed

  • 8/2 cotton

Registration:

SWG Members: Noon on October 15, 2022
Non-members: Noon on November 5, 2022 subject to space available.

Dates:

3 sessions, approximately 2 hours each:
January 21st, 2023, 10:30AM - 12:30PM
January 28th, 2023, 10:30AM - 12:30PM
February 4th, 2023, 10:30AM - 12:30PM

The instructor will be available for questions through the course via email.

The lessons will be recorded for viewing for participants of the course, and available on the instructor’s webpage.

Estimated cost $100 (based on 10 students enrolled). Final cost will depend on the number of students enrolled. Final payment is due during the workshop. Deposit of $50 is required at registration.

About Janet:

Janet studied Industrial Textile Design at the Scottish College of Textiles graduating with a 1st class Honours Degree and the Dr Oliver medal for the best design student for 1972.

Janet worked in industry for several years before buying a 16-shaft George Wood Dobby loom and started her career as a commission weaver. Janet initially wove floor rugs, but finally specialised into weaving original fabrics for clothing and interiors for private clients. Janet stopped this work in 2009. After sitting weaving yardage for 35 years, she is now concentrating on passing her knowledge on to others, by teaching courses and writing books.
